Section 1.8 Linear Transformations

A transformation : T:Rn→RmT : \R^n\to \R^m

domain : Rn\R^n. codomain : Rm\R^m. T(x)T(x) is the image of xx. The set of T(x)T(x) is called range.

Linear Transformation

A transformation is linear iff:

  • T(u⃗+v⃗)=T(u⃗)+T(v⃗)T(\vec u+\vec v)=T(\vec u)+T(\vec v)
  • cT(u⃗)=cT(u⃗)cT(\vec u)=cT(\vec u)

which can be simplified to:

T(cu⃗+dv⃗)=cT(u⃗)+dT(v⃗)T(c\vec u+d\vec v)=cT(\vec u)+dT(\vec v)

Matrix transformation is a kind of linear transformation.

If TT is a linear transformation, then T(0)=0T(0)=0

Section 1.9 The Matrix of Linear Transformation

Let T:Rn→RmT:\R^n\to \R^m, there exists a unique matrix AA such that T(x)=AxT(x)=Ax

A=[T(e1)…T(en)]A=[T(e_1)\dots T(e_n)]

where eje_j is the jj th column of the identity matrix in Rn\R^n

  • A mapping T:Rn→RmT:\R^n\to \R^m is said to be onto Rm\R^m if each bb in Rm\R^m is the image of at least one xx in Rn\R^n
    • The columns of AA span Rm\R^m
  • A mapping T:Rn→RmT:\R^n\to\R^m is said to be one-to-one if each bb in Rm\R^m is the image of at most one xx in Rn\R^n
    • All the columns of AA are linearly independent.

Existence and Uniqueness Questions:

  1. Is it a map from R4\R^4 to R3\R^3 : Check if each row has a pivot position. (If Ax=bAx=b is consistent for every bb) This is called onto.

  2. Is it a one-to-one mapping? (Check if xx is unique) Check if there is a free variable, that there are multiple solutions xx.

One-to-One have no relevant to onto! Onto see the codomain, while one-to-one see the domain !!!

Which is equated to T(x)=0T(x)=0 has only trivial solution(iff)

Review : Existence of Solutions

  1. For each bb in Rm\R^m, the equation Ax=bAx=b has a solution
  2. Each bb in Rm\R^m is a linear combination of the columns of AA
  3. The columns of AA span Rm\R^m
  4. AA has a pivot position in every row

The columns of matrix AA are linearly independent iff the equation Ax=0Ax=0 has only the trivial solution.

a pivot in every column guarantees at most one solution; a pivot in every row guarantees at least one
