Honors Calculus I - 3 Function

Function

For f:X→Yf:X\to Y is a mapping

  • domain : Df=XD_f=X
  • codomain : YY
  • range : RfR_f (The definite numbers)
  • yy is the image of xx
  • xx is the inverse image of yy

If :

  • Rf=YR_f=Y, that ff is a surjective
  • f(x1)=f(x2)f(x_1)=f(x_2) implies x1=x2x_1=x_2, that ff is a injective
  • bijective : a mapping ff is both surjective and injective.

Inverse mapping

Where f−1:Rf→Xf^{-1}:R_f\to X. A mapping is inversible iff it is bijective.

Cancellation Equations :

  • f−1(f(x))=xf^{-1}(f(x))=x
  • f(f−1(x))=xf(f^{-1}(x))=x

The inverse function f−1(x)f^{-1}(x) is the reflection of that of the function f(x)f(x) with respect to the diagonal line y=xy=x

  • Composition function : h(x)=g(f(x))h(x)=g(f(x)), or h=g∘fh=g\circ f

Intervals

  • Neighborhood : Nr(p)={q∈R:∣p−q∣<r}N_r(p)=\{q\in \R:|p-q|<r\}, where rr is called the radius
  • Interior point of E: Nr(p)⊂EN_r(p)\subset E
  • monotonically increasing / decreasing
  • odd / even function
  • periodic function

Basic Elementary Function

Power function

For fixed n∈Nn\in\N, f(x)=xnf(x)=x^n

Radical Function

For fixed n∈N+n\in \N_{+}, f(x)=xnf(x)=\sqrt[n]x

  • When nn is even, the domain and range are both [0,+∞)[0,+\infty)
  • While nn is odd, the domain and range are (−∞,+∞)(-\infty,+\infty)

Exponential Function

For a>0a>0, f(x)=axf(x)=a^x

  • When 0<a<10<a<1, f(x)f(x) is strictly decreasing in its domain; when a>1a>1, f(x)f(x) is strictly increasing in its domain
  • laws of exponents

Logarithmic function

f(x)=log⁡axf(x)=\log_ax

  • Laws of logarithms
  • natural logarithm : y=ln⁡xy=\ln x

Trigonometric functions

sine function, cosine function and tangent funtion

Two key equalities hold (which almost all basic trigonometric identities can be derived)

  • Pythagorean identity : sin⁡2x+cos⁡2x=1\sin^2x+\cos^2x=1
  • Euler’s formula : eix=cos⁡x+isin⁡xe^{ix}=\cos x+i\sin x

  • cotangent: cot⁡θ=1tan⁡θ\cot \theta = \dfrac 1 {\tan \theta}
  • secant : sec⁡θ=1cos⁡θ\sec \theta =\dfrac 1{\cos \theta}
  • cosecant : csc⁡θ=1sin⁡θ\csc\theta =\dfrac 1 {\sin \theta}

  • θ=arcsin⁡y  (sin⁡−1y)\theta = \arcsin y\; (\sin^{-1}y) : where yy is in [−1,1][-1,1] and θ\theta in [−π2,π2][-{\pi\over 2},{\pi\over 2}]
  • θ=arccos⁡y  (cos⁡−1y)\theta = \arccos y\; (\cos^{-1}y) : where yy is in [−1,1][-1,1] and θ\theta in [0,π][0,\pi]
  • θ=arctan⁡y  (tan⁡−1y)\theta = \arctan y\; (\tan^{-1}y) : where yy is in (−∞,+∞)(-\infty,+\infty) and θ\theta in (−π2,π2)(-{\pi\over 2},{\pi\over 2})
